Try the test I mentioned in my post. Take some mothers polish, rub the area with a rag and if the rag turns black after 30 sec's of polishing you are down to aluminium. If not there is some kind of clearcoat on top.

Yes doing all this have a sack full of black rags, there just not coming up as bright as the pepper pots I did. But I want to know why? Is it because of modern meterials used in casting? I know magniesum can't be polished so if some of this was added it might explain.

different "blends" of alloy give a different shine ,
they look like they need more work with your polishing mops/wheels?,

Hope you don't mind if I chime in chaps...could do with a hand if you please.

Got a set of BBS RM102's. They're made up at the moment with tyres on. Got them a few weeks back with my E30, but now realise I shouldn't have ran them without sealing them and what not as they've got pitted and etched :(

It's the lips that I'm looking to get mirrored again.

I've got some Mothers Mag & Alu Polish, and some ACF-50 to seal them. But the Mothers isn't touching the etching. I've also got some mops for my drill with red and green compounds.

Do I need to get some grit/wet and dry on them? I've tried a few test areas with some 1500, 1200 and 600 grit. It's removed some of the marks, but I don't want to get them all gritted if I don't need to. And I'm guessing if they do need grit papering then I'll have to take them apart? Gargh...although, that would give me a chance to change the colour of the barrels.

Is it feasible to do all this work whilst they're made up?

Here are some pics of one of the wheels before I've done any work...

And after about 2/3 hours of polishing. I tried using the mops too...although I don't have a clue what I'm doing with them...

Finally, after a bit of grit action this evening...

So, do I need to grit/wet and dry them to get rid of the pitting/etching?

If I do, do I need to take them apart?

If I don't need to take them about, what's the best way to work around the bolts and to protect the centre barrel?

And would this kit help get the polishing stage near to perfect? The one at the top here...http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acatalog/Standard_Polishing_Kits.html#a464

Sorry for the long winded post, but any help would be greatly appreciated...I want these back on my E30 asap as my RZ's look naff...ha!

Thanks in advance.

i just turned these tarnished old ridged diamond cut wheels from this...
Image

to this in 6 hours (per wheel) (5 stages of sanding from 120grit to remove the grooves, to 1200 grit wet and dry, and then 3 different polishing mops). not quite mirrored, but a definite improvement...
