BBS LM rebuild

Postby shortwave360 » 17 Jun 2010 22:52

I'm far enough along with my wheel project to start sharing some pics of the used BBS LMs I bought. They needed the paint & PC stripped along with all the dings dug out and smoothed. I decided to go all out and make these wheels epic and they should be done within a couple of weeks. You can look at the pictures to figure out the direction of the look and the final color you're just gonna halfta wait for!

The centers are at the machine shop getting ready for the reverse mount and I should be ready with the barrels and new hardware ready to stretch some rubber on!

Thanks! 18"x9" et42 for the front and 18"x10" et50 on the rears. This pic is old and there are many major changes to the car in the works along with these wheels.

Got the centers back from the machine shop and the mounting surface for the faces are zeroed out now. A little before and after shot:

The task of sanding and polishing the barrels was a project I greatly underestimated, but is very satisfying now that I can see the end and can move on to the final stages of getting the wheels painted and fitted to the car. I am on the 2nd stage of compound in the pictures below:

I am at the 3rd stage of compound with only the rouge to go! Went in to Speedware Motorsports and ordered my tires. I went with a Falken 452 225/35 for my front 18"x9 and a 245/35 for my 10" wide rear. By this time next week they should be mounted and I will be ready to fit the wheels to the arches.

Polishing work is so damn good. Like a pro!

Wouldn't be little pain in the ass to maintain inner side of the barrel now when it is polished? :problem:

:D Major PITA to keep clean! This was my first "real" metal refurbishing job and I am very pleased. Detailing the wheels will be fun after the chore of sanding and polishing. It will be fun to show off to people how clean I keep the wheels.

I have a bit of news... my tires finally made it in and I get them mounted this Friday. I have decided to wait for the rouge (polishing) compound until I get them back from the tire shop. Here is a little teaser for kicks: Image

So many hurdles for the whole build. It's closer then ever before. Wheels are still raw though. Car drove yesterday and got aligned and this is the latest pic to date: Image

Sweet job man ! Looking for a set of these for my octavia I found a set but the guy has powder coated the lips as he didn't want to polish them which is understandable I suppose if your a busy man but if I wanted to take them back to the polished face can I strip the powder coat off or is it a case of new lips ?
