Going to look at some e30's this weekend. Is there any way to spot genuine dishes and barrels? Obviously the centres have the numbers and markings, but did bbs mark the dishes or barrels in anyway? Thanks!

It's been ages since I posted here, but been lurking around again lately and seen lots (too much) cool stuff.

A few years ago I picked up this single E50 wheel as it was cheap, probably because of the (small) crack in one of the spokes.

I picked it up as I wanted it purely for decoration and because if was an original BMW 5x120 model, which it had to be (me being anal and stuff)

And how it's been for a while now

Image

It was just the center and lip/barrel.

I contacted bbs-racing-wheels.com and bought a NOS black center cap, NOS chrome/ss cap, rim stickers and valve cap to give it the proper look.

They are 16". In the future I would love to maybe to a rebuilt to 17". I really want a much deeper lip, where the center drops beyond the edge so there is a bit of a horizontal plane.

Like so:

Image

I don't know much about E50's when it comes to the different versions. Mine say E50.1, which makes me assume there are more versions like E50.2 etc.
I also don't know if like BBS RS wheels, there are many different center sizes, or just the 15" flatbed centers and bigger deepbed centers.
Also seen centers that have "BBS" stamped inside the mesh part, others inside the central star part.

I did notice BBS Racing wheels offer a service to have the centers checked and repainted, but when I inquiered I was informed that wheels that do not check out okay would not be returned because they don't want people to sell broken/cracked centers. I don't know if this would even be legal, but I don't want to loose my cool decoration because of this. I would never sell it as "OK".

Also, the bolt holes have a lip in them. I take it these need some type of insert in them to accept normal bolts (I'd like to use that to complete the look).
I also noticed that on the back, besides the obviousl lugbolt holes, there are 5 more deep hols. They look like the holes normally used to located center lock versions on the hub, but mine are obviously no center locks. Anyone an idea?

Centers are the same size just differ in everything else so you can use them from 15" to 18" as they use the same 20 hole parts. The rear holes might be for weight saving but 2 out of the 3 sets I've owned were also centerlock besides having the 5x130 pattern. These wheels use inserts as nuts which make them much easier to take apart and put back together.
